What Made USM an Apex University

"How could a University that neglect the importance of meritocracy, and practicing favoritism at the same time, will ever move forward to compete with other reputable universities around the world?"

What made USM so special for being an Apex university? What made USM even qualified for that prestigious title and benefits?

First of all, being an Apex university would mean more autonomy than other local public universities who are under direct authority by the government. They get to make more wise and independent decisions, and have pledged to steer USM towards outstanding performance, challenging the conventional style of managing an academic institution that failed to increase reputations of our public universities.

The ultimate purpose of all these extra-funding-and-self-autonomy thingy is to push USM to becoming Malaysia’s first world-class university. They are boasting to the nation that they will become a university that retains Malaysia’s finest brains and potentials.

However, I am in doubt now, if USM has the primary qualifications to call itself an apex university. When the first batch of shortlisted applicants of the first Malaysian Apex University were revealed, voices of anger and disappointment can be heard throughout the country.

Many of the top STPM scorers have been rejected a place in USM. Many of the STPM students with 4.0 CGPA and good co-curricular activity participation FAILED miserably in their attempts to get a place in USM. That is the disappointment. Its not unfamiliar for local public universities to practice quota system in their intake of students, but most people still find it hard to accept the fact that this happened to USM, the Apex University that vowed to be the center of excellence in academic studies.

The anger part that follow next is the news of some Pre U leavers, with CGPA 3.7, can easily get into Pharmacy course in USM. Some have secured a place in Dentistry even with CGPA as low as 3.0.

Although the interview and co curricular marks are vital weights in the applications, I do not believe that ALL matrikulasi leavers who could not even score higher than 3.5 can perform any better in co curricular activities. Matrikulasi students spend only about 9 months in studies, where as STPM students need to combat heavy workloads every day, for 1 and a half year.

Yet, top STPM achievers were being denied by USM that obviously favor Matrikulasi students and also a tiny bit of STPM leavers who underperformed in their studies. The cream of STPM who endured so much of hardships and also achieved the best results in the whole country are not rewarded and appreciated by USM. They are now at least 10 STPM leavers who scored a CGPA of 4.0 being cruelly rejected for Pharmacy course at the Apex University. More victims of this “backward policies” implemented by USM have yet to voice out their distress, and disbelief.

How could a University that neglect the importance of meritocracy, and practicing favoritism at the same time, will ever move forward to compete with other reputable universities around the world? Is the promise to bring USM to the top 50 universities in the world by year 2020 a feasible goal? Or is it merely a government’s propaganda to mask their miserable failure to ‘upgrade’ our local public universities?

Is USM becoming worse than it used to be under the influences of biased, unfair and non-merit education policies?

How can I ever be convinced to believe that USM is an Apex University?

Bribed, Bribed again or Dreaming Big?

One of the independent candidates, Aminah, of the Penanti by-election had stood out and point her finger directly to PKR for trying to bribe her.

She was allegedly given two "choices"

1. RM80,000 Plus the presidency of Penang Municipal Council if she retracts from the race.

2. The post of Deputy CM of Penang is she wins.

Well, here comes my doubts

1. PKR wouldnt be so stupid to offer someone who suddenly retracts from the by-election, because this will only become a negative issue for BN to bite on.

2. If even the president of Penang PKR does not get to become the Deputy CM, do you think PKR will offer this old lady such luxurious 'package'?

3. I doubt if she can even get back her deposit from the the Election Commission.

There are three possibilities, however,
It's either:

1. PKR is too dumb to send two "party leaders" to "bribe" her at her house.

or

2. This old lady is bribed by UMNO to make up all these stories because she has advantage to 'voice up' due to her position as one of the candidates.

or

3. This old lady is dreaming BIG like Barack Obama.

The 7th By-election

The state assemblyman of Menek Urai, Kelantan, passed away at Hospital Raja Zainal, Kota Bharu early morning today.

Ismail Yaacob,60, who was a PAS member, triumphed in the 308 election by winning a majority of 1352 votes over UMNO representative, Zulkepli Omar.

This would mean the 7th by-election in Malaysia after 308 last year, and it will most probably be held right after Penanti.

This is probably the best chance for Malaysians to convey their discontent towards Barisan Nasional, as the Menek Urai state seat mainly comprises of Malay community,(99.3%). Our deputy PM, Muhyiddin Yasin blamed on the Chinese for voting for the opposition in Bukit Gantang election which had caused BN a disgraceful loss. That's a bright way of wrapping up their own stupidity eh? Let's see if they could win Menek Urai, and if not, I'm waiting to see who are to be blamed this time.

Voice out Malaysians, reject UMNO, reject Barisan Nasional!

MCA & JPA Scholarships

It is not unusual to see MCA people during the time JPA result is released each year. For the past few decades, it has been a "must" whereby top scorers of SPM swarming into the MCA office and begging them for help, and you can notice that on the newspaper the next day that says :

“马华为优异生上诉公共服务奖学金” or translated into " MCA: We're ready to help Top scorers" or something like that.

But, if MCA is the government, why can't they fix up this issue once and for all?

This is simply because they need something to ACT, to SHOW, and in certain extent, to "PROVE" that they're actually "serving" for the people. So, the more top scorers in our country failing to get JPA scholarships, the more chance for them to 'show off' their 'service' and 'authority'. I just couldnt stand seeing the cream of our new generation BEGGING MCA for the opportunity to receive better education. It is simply a DISGRACE to all Malaysians that what you get in this country is not based on how hard you worked or how good you are; it's more like the success of one individual depends heavily on what 'type' of 'connection' you managed to get onto.

Same thing happens every year during the intake of public local universities, STPM students who scored perfect results were being rejected. Instead, graduates of Matrikulasi which CGPA lower than 4.0 get admitted to Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy courses. That is when MCA will 'advertise' themselves through the media by voluntarily 'helping' these students to 'fight for their rights'.

You wait and see, this 'natural phenomena' happen again next year at around this time. MCA will again become the "heroes" for the rejected top scorers.

I found this article from Malaysiakini, targeting on this issue that has been happening again and again for 30 years.

Video of Speaker being dragged out BANNED

The screening of the video captured on 7th May during the state assembly that shows Sivakumar, the speaker, being dragged out of the hall has been banned on the television. Government put that order in effect immediately after incident whereby Barisan Nasional and police dragged the Speaker out of the Hall, before appointing their own "speaker".

Democracy in Malaysia is already dead, what about the freedom of speech and media?

Besides, image of an unidentified man carrying firearm into the Hall is another prove that Barisan Nasional is threatening the country's Democracy by force. Hee Mei Foong has also being captured on a photograph with she aiming a pepper spray(weapon) towards Pakatan Rakyat's state assemblyman. Without the basic respect for our country's law and constitutions, I doubt if the mentality and vision of Barisan's leader can lead Malaysia towards positive changes.

UMNO-style-gangster with a handgun.

Hee Mei Foong with her pepperspray which she strongly denied that it was a pepperspray, and claimed that it is a USB thumbdrive instead. Well, its a weird pose of holding a thumbdrive isnt it?

Nizar is Legitimate Perak MB

Nizar giving a thumb-up outside the court
Photo: Malaysiakini

Nizar, who was 'sacked' by the Sultan of Perak not long ago, has been declared as the legitimate Menteri Besar of Perak by Kuala Lumpur High Court judge, Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim.

The court's decision ruled out Zambry as the Perak MB, because it is not within Sultan Perak's authority to do so. Zambry's personal assistant told the media that Barisan Nasional will abide the ruling of the court by moving out of the state building as soon as possible. However, Najib has indicated Barisan's intention to appeal against the court's decision.

Why Choose STPM?

Not Really!

This article is directed to those who decided to study STPM 2009.

Most of the SPM 2008 graduates who applied for JPA scholarships should have already gotten their replies, whether or not they received the awards.

Anyhow, I believe there are thousands of students out there failed to get JPA scholarships even though they scored straight 1A's. In Jit Sin alone, there are more than 100 students scoring 10A's and above, maybe even more than that. But what I'm trying to say here is that, JPA scholarships are awarded to you if you're lucky enough.

If you received either JPA scholarship ( overseas U) or Matrikulasi program (local U only), go for it. Either one of them will guarantee you MORE chance to further your studies in university compared to other means. But if you're the unlucky outcast, who failed to get ANY special offers besides form six at highschool, that does not mean your future is totally gone.

I used to think that I was so unfortunate that I had to continue my two years studies at highschool as a sixth form student; but not anymore after I started doing my first month of STPM study. Things can be so bitter that you see friends who went for Matrikulasi or JPA managed to secure a place in universities one year ahead of you, without having to put in as much effort; but hold on, I can assure you that you have just made the right choice by enrolling in sixth form studies.

I am not going to debate why Pre U programs in private universities can be a waste of time of your life if your daddy is not RICH enough, but i'm going to tell you straight, on WHY you're on the right path, STPM.

1. Challenge. Many friends of mine who opted for private colleges right after SPM asked me, Why choose form six. "I heard form six is very hard lar!" , " form six is not for human one!". Yes, they knew form six is tough. I knew it before I finally chosen to stay back at highschool for that. The STPM syllabus covers very wide range of knowledge for each subject. Some say that science stream is especially hard and tough, and I would agree on that. However, I believe that the commerce and arts streams are not easy as well.

STPM is particularly hard because you are required to cram so much stuffs into your head in just 1 and a half year. Most teachers would even call you back to school during saturdays and holidays for extra classes, just to catch up the syllabus before the real exam. I still remember that teachers were still struggling to cover the last few topics less than 4 WEEKS before STPM. And of course, a 7.30am-3.00pm contact hours everyday is not unusual for sixth form students.

But if you carefully think about it, you'll realise that these challenges are fun, and rewarding. You get to spend time doing all sorts of experiments, practicals and assignments with your classmates. You get to learn alot MORE before making your way to the university. So far, all my sixth form ex classmates are really doing their degree programs with confidence and pride. The difference in quality of a STPM graduate and a graduate of a 8-months-preU-program is VERY distinct by the time you get into university.

You can ask any STPM graduates around you IF they have wasted their time rushing and catching up with the mountain of syllabus, most will say no.

2. Future. Many SPM grads who are 'forced' into form six are particularly worried about their future. STPM is only BAD for ONE THING - chance of getting into your dream course in local public university is very small (especially medic, dentistry, and pharmacy). Only about 10% of STPM graduates constitute the total number of students in critical courses(in local public U). However, Many of my classmates got into Nutrition, Biotech, Food Tech courses in local public unversities. These courses are not hard to get in despite their pouplarities, compared to critical courses.

But if you are ready to put effort in it, and give it a good try by working hard in STPM, you can score good results you never expected. Most of the STPM students dont score 4.0 CGPA, but they can still easily get admitted into National University of Singapore (3.5CGPA is still accepted), Nanyang Technology University.

Local private
universities? The last time I checked the entry requirements for medicine course in IMU, AIMST and many other medicine schools, a results of BBBB in if more than enough. Pharmacy? Law? Accounting? they are ALOT easier to get in. And dont worry about the fees, as you can borrow PTPTN loans ( of course you need to pay back) to achieve your dreams.

By the way, almost ALL overseas universities recognize STPM certificate. Australia, UK, USA, Taiwan, Indonesia, India , you name it, they are welcoming you as a STPM graduate, if you can afford the tuition fees.

All in all, if you really work hard and do well in STPM, your certificate is invaluable; but if you only get an average result, you will still be HIGHLY REGARDED by ANY universities in any place. There are much more opportunities for STPM grads compared to private colleges pre U graduates.

3. At last, form six is FUN. Whether or not you love your school, it is going to be fun as you stay back at highschool for the final two years. You'll eventually garnered more than just experience, fantastic memories and priceless friendships will follow you for your whole life.

Congrats to ALL future STPM students, you're about to enter the League of Sixers!

Be sure to read Why is STPM a phobia to SPM graduates? as well.

The state assembly session of Perak ended up really ugly for the "ruling" party. Police forces have turned into mercenaries of UMNO, dragging out the Speaker from his seat today, by force.

Has the legislation and the Constitution of Malaysia that has been used by UMNO to cover up their wrong-doings, become pieces of worthless toilet papers? Where is the Law when Malaysians needed it the most? Where the heck are our policemen, when UMNO's lust and greed for power became a menace to the multiracial society in Malaysia?

Najib, have you delievered what you promised? One Malaysia? Or UMNO number 1? You're a corrupt with rotten conscience, I can understand that. But I just do not get it why Malaysians can tolerate people like you and UMNO for all these years since independence.

While the party is constantly making remarks like "Chinese are threatening the existence of Malays" or by spreading hate among Malaysians through media like Utusan or TV3, I hope Malaysians, regardless of race and religions can stand up and fight for true democracy without fear.

Below is an article I've read from Malaysiakini, which I think depicts clearly the Najib administration and the lies within.

Title:Wearing Black is Ilegal, but Waving the Kris is Not.

najib announce new cabinet lineup 090409 05

hishamuddin hussein kissing the keris at umno 57 agm 221106

(II)有相当时间和便利准备他的辩护并与他自己选择的律师联络;

(III)受审时间不被无故拖延;

vigil and arrest in front brickfield polis station 060509 liau kok fah

Syabas!

Credits to Angel for the information on this post. Thanks!
